2023 POWER SUMMIT UNITES ENERGY LEADERS, MCOS, AND STAKEHOLDERS

Anchored on the theme “Energy and Efficiency: Understanding the Challenges of the Power Industry,” the 2023 Power Summit brought together industry experts from the Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), National Electrification Administration (NEA), partner organizations NCCECO and PHILRECA, SOCOTECO-I stakeholders, and member-consumer-owners (MCOs). The summit took place at Hotel De Viajera in Brgy. Morales, City of Koronadal, and was simultaneously live-streamed through SOCOTECO-I’s Facebook Account.

The event commenced with an array of inspiring messages from leaders within the energy sector: Director III Nilo Geroche from the DOE, Atty. Arjay Louie Eu Cuanan, Chief Regulation Officer of ERC, and Engr. Godofredo B. Homez representing NCCECO on behalf of Edgardo R. Masongsong, the National Chairman. Their insights not only illuminated the programs of their respective organizations but also delved into crucial topics and concerns within the power sector. The summit provided an overview of the industry landscape, serving as a platform for knowledge-sharing.

Director Hilarion G. Octaviano, the Board President, extended a warm welcome to all participants and shared the summit’s objectives.

Highlight of the gathering was the insightful presentation of SOCOTECO-I’s Legal Counsel, Atty. Sandra Mae B. Bonrustro, entitled “Understanding the Legal Personality of SOCOTECO-I.” Atty. Bonrusto explained SOCOTECO-I’s dual identity as a Distribution Utility and a Cooperative, an entity with a resolute dedication to advancing rural electrification. Notably, she voiced a stance on the pressing issue of the potential takeover of SOCOTECO-I. This deliberation hinged on the legal framework of RA 10531, delving into the intricacies of Section 8 Step In Rights governing interventions in cases of ailing ECs.

Engr. Raffee Edsel B. Epistola, General Manager, unveiled a strategic Action Plan addressing major concerns such as rates, reliability, capacity, and customer service. He conveyed SOCOTECO-I’s commitment to cost reduction while maintaining reasonable electricity rates. The cooperative’s proactive measures, including preventive maintenance of power lines and substations, along with comprehensive line clearing activities, were also comprehensively discussed.

Francis Ian A. Fedoc, Department In Charge of Internal Audit, contributed insights on Power Rates, imparting attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing rate structures. Another highlight of the event was the engaging open forum, moderated by Ms. Mary Ann P. Morales, ASD1 Manager. An opportunity which provided participants to seek clarifications on emerging issues such as electricity rates, power interruptions, and supply contracts.

In his closing message, Dir. Pedro G. Bolivar III encapsulated the summit’s significance in fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and synergy among stakeholders. The summit’s objective to facilitate meaningful engagement with MCOs, stakeholders, and the broader community was met with resounding success. The attendance of 83 representatives spanning various sectors, including local government units, religious organizations, educational institutions, and more, showcased the power of collaboration in shaping the energy landscape of the future.
